I was flipping through an Australian fashion magazine the other day when I came across a page of men’s fashion inspired by Hunter S. Thompson. I did a double-take…no way could this be real, I thought. Before I go any further, for those of you who aren’t familiar with Hunter S. Thompson he was a writer, purveyor of all things hedonistic and creator of Gonzo journalism. Most people are probably more familiar with Johnny Depp’s portrayal  of the late writer in the film adaptation of his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Depp is currently filming another Thompson adaptation, The Rum Diary.

Moving on. No where in Hunter S. Thompson’s biography does it say he was a ”style icon.” Not that I know of. He was famous for Hawaiian shirts (or any loud shirt, for that matter), floppy Gilligan-esque hats, big sunglasses, shorts and sneakers. He had a very seventies look that extended far beyond the decade. And always a cigarette in hand (or mouth).

The question on deck is this: would you, ladies, date a guy that dresses like Hunter S. Thompson?

I need to rationalize Hunter S. Thompson’s presence in a contemporary fashion magazine from half a world away. The man definitely had a look, but I’m not sure it’s one that’s going to catch on. Still images from the 2008 documentary Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson give a good idea as to what I’m talking about.

So, tell me. Is this what you want the guy on your arm to be wearing? I’m curious.

No way! I already have one of those hanging around. I like to see a well-dressed man, whether dressed in a suit, slacks, shorts or jeans. Nothing fancy, just matching and with a modicum of what pieces of clothing should be worn at the same time!

I always thought Hunter had some style. Very seventies style, true, but you know, seventies styles really wasn't all that bad. The good parts at least. And I think Hunter mastered some of the best of it. Plus, short shorts? *Swoon*
