The Helen Keller Dance is getting a lot of buzz after the pop group 3OH!3 references it in their song “Don’t Trust Me”. The dance, which comes off as pretty offensive, is performed to the following lyrics: “Shush girl, shut your lips, do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips.” Unfortunately this dance is becoming popular on YouTube, causing copycats to upload videos of themselves doing it.
Now, there are plenty of artists that make derogatory statements in their music, but to sexually exploit Helen Keller! That’s just wrong. That said, the Helen Keller Dance has been the focal point of their career and this one hit wonder group probably won’t last much longer.
It’s not only mean to make fun of people that can’t defend themselves, but to ridicule a person based on their disabilities is unimaginable. Whether joking or serious, the implications in this song are insensitive and demeaning.

lol ur offended
shush and go back to bloggosphering about shorts
^ oh whatever
it is insensitive. making light of someone’s disabilities? i hate to be all pc police here, ruining all the fun, but this is, simply put: mean, cruel and unnecessary.
Why does Helen Keller deserve special treatment because she’s disabled? Sexual exploitation (of a minor sort) is infinitely worse because disabled people are what…fragile, unable to protect themselves, and asexual? This reference in no way compares to other lyrics in the genre, which are far more offensive.
I’m more offended at your dangerous misconceptions about the disabled than I am the lyrics. As long as society views us (the disabled) as a protected (inferior) class of citizen, we will never attain equal rights because they (the able-bodied) won’t give us the chance to shoulder our responsibilities for our ‘protection’.
Considering Helen Keller’s stances, education, and advocacy, I think she’d have been fully capable of defending herself. Anyone who’s done research on her would know that. Your knee-jerk ‘protection’ of a fragile, disabled person is shallow and unenlightened.
I do agree with Jessica. I am only concerned about the following posters… I guess for some IGNORANCE is bliss! R (couldnt even provide a full name) Doesnt seem to understand that we wouldnt be having this conversation if the song was censored… The song clearly should be banned… Why ruin Helen Kellers name? Shes such a strong person who endured so much.. Shes a part of us our history.. I feel that Jessica has been an excellent and brave to advocate… Its veryyyy sad that people think that its strange that she wrote this, or are actually trying to put a song before an innocent person with exceptionalities… Its scary.. What is our world coming to? Does anyone agree that that part of the song is disgusting? Anyone?
I agree with Stacey. The words referring to Helen Keller talking with her hips downgrades the amazing legacy that she left behind. The point the ‘R’ is trying to make is valid but has nothing to do with the low lyrics in this song. To R… I think your argument about ‘special treatment of the disabled’ should be ‘argued’ in the right context. You over-reacted and made an assumption about Helen Keller being seen as ‘inferior’ when in fact, there are people out there that do not like ‘ANYONE’ being made fun of, regardless of their abilities.
