Stealing billions of dollars and going to jail may not be great for your health. Fox News reportsthat Bernie Madoff, the infamous Ponzi schemer who is serving 150 years at a North Carolina federal prison after pleading guilty to swindling more than $65 billion, has been telling his prison pals that he’s going to die soon.
“He’s been taking about 20 pills a day for his cancer,” one inmate told the New York Post. “He talks about it all the time. He’s not doing very well.” Everyone knew that Madoff, who is 71, wouldn’t be able to live out his entire prison sentence – but they weren’t sure why he took the entire blame for the financial scheme. Now it may be more clear: if he knew he was going to die anyway, he might as well spare his conspirators.
Fox News actually reported last monththat Madoff’s fellow inmates were kind of impressed by his silence, and weren’t as tough on him as they might have been. With a scheme that screwed over 1,000 people (including some Hollywood royalty) out of so much money, many believe he must have had help.
A few months before Madoff came to the prison in June, rumors started to surface that he was suffering from pancreatic cancer. Madoff’s attorney and ex-wife would not return messages, but his attorney was once asked about his client’s possible cancer and did not confirm nor deny the rumors.
