“Topping Off the Tank” Can Cost You

There are all kinds of tips out there for saving money on gas but here’s one I hadn’t heard of before: that frequently filling up before it’s really necessary (i.e. hitting the gas station when the tank is still half full) can cost you money. How you ask? Because gas evaporates into the air every time you take the gas cap off.

My first thought when I heard this was that fuel lost to fumes must be in such small amounts it’s senseless to worry about it, but apparently as many as 147 million gallons are lost that way every year. That’s a LOT of gas!

So if you’re serious about conserving gas (and saving money) then remember this tip:

Try to let your car’s gas tank get pretty close to empty before you stop at the station — and then fill it all the way up.

Not only will you thwart the evaporation monster but you’ll also make less trips to the pump, which saves gas, and the time spent driving with an emptier tank makes for better gas mileage since the car is lighter and uses less energy to move.

All super-small differences, admittedly, but then it’s the little stuff that counts right?
