Okay, I’ve heard of a beer hair rinse. Even a mayonnaise mask. I might even put in a mashed up avocado for softer hair. But a hair treatment containing bull semen? I’ve got to draw the line somewhere. It’s been reported that Hari’s salon in Knightsbridge, London is offering (and people are actually receiving) a 45-minute deep conditioning treatment where the star ingredient is Aberdeen Angus Bull semen.
Why bull semen? According to the salon’s owner Hari Salem, he’s searched far and wide for a substance that leaves hair soft and thick. “I have been searching for an organic product with a lot of protein because that is what hair is made of and lacks when it is dry,” he says. “All the best treatments are protein based. Synthetic treatments are good, but they are heavy if you have fine hair and can make it look greasy. In the end, the bull’s sperm was the winner.”
The salon combines the semen with another protein-rich ingredient called katera. (Thankfully, katera is plant-based and not the by-product of another animal’s reproductive organ.) The mixture is refrigerated until it is applied to freshly-shampooed hair. Then the client is put under a steamer so the product can penetrate the hair shaft. The last step is a blow-out (resisting the urge to insert dirty joke here), which gives the hair more shine and body.
The service ranges from 55-85 pounds or 90-138 US dollars. “It will be an ongoing treatment as long as the bulls perform, Salem says.
