Celine Dion Pregnant Through Use of Frozen Embryo

Celine Dion is pregnant at 41, and reportedly the pregnancy comes as a result of implanting an embryo that was frozen eight years ago.

This is the second child to be born to Dion and her long-time manager, Rene Angelil.  While the couple has received scrutiny in the past for their vast age difference (Dion is 41 and Anglelil is 67), they are now being criticized for their decision to have another child so late in life.

I, however, applaud the couple for having the foresight to take steps to ensure a healthy pregnancy and a healthy child.  After the age of 35, not only is it harder for a couple to conceive, but they place their unborn child at higher risk for birth defects and pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia and placenta previa.  By choosing to harvest and fertilize her eggs at the age of 33, Dion dramatically reduced her chances of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome or other chromsomal abnormalities.

Still, some may be skeptical about the ability of this couple to keep up with a newborn and their now eight-year-old son.  The truth of the matter is, though, there are far worse candidates for parenthood bringing kids into this world.  The couple has been married for fifteen years, and thus no Maury paternity tests are needed. They clearly can afford to raise another child, and aren’t planning on having you and I foot the bill for the hospital, Pampers, Cheetos and Marlboros.  If Rene is unable to get down on all fours for a rousing game of leapfrog with is little Canuck kiddies, he can hire someone to leap for him.

No, Celine owes me no apology for utilizing medical technology to become a mother again.  Now her cover of AC/DC’s “Shook Me All Night Long,” that’s another story.
