New KFC Sandwich Uses Fried Chicken as Bun

Sometimes sandwiches get so overwhelming with those thick buns, you know? Luckily KFC has come up with the perfect solution: use fried chicken instead of bread. I’m not kidding. According to the Huffington Post, the fast-food chain has introduced a new sandwich, the ”Double Down,” which involves bacon, two kinds of cheeses and sauce between two pieces of fried chicken.

It’s kind of an interesting shift, considering that KFC introduced grilled chicken a couple months ago to give customers a taste of the “lighter, unfried side of KFC.” Oprah had featured a coupon for the new options, which caused such a frenzy that KFC had to discontinue it.  So what’s this about, KFC? Healthy’s not cool anymore? Time to accept the obesity epidemic with open (flabby) arms and fried-chicken-bread?

Even if you are intrigued and want to try the Double Down, you’ll only be able to find it in Rhode Island and Nebraska, where it’s being test-marketed. There’s not even information about it on the KFC website yet (but there is annoying music and people dancing while eating grilled chicken). However, the Vancouver Sun has done an independent calorie analysis and concluded the Double Down likely has 1228 calories. Rick Maynard with KFC public relations says that number is inaccurate; although KFC has not done an official workup, they estimate that the Double Down only has 590 calories.

Road trip to Nebraska, anyone?
