Ice, ice – baby, we gotta slow down. Reuters reports that Toyota Motorcorp is recalling 95,700 Toyota and Scion vehicles sold in the United States because ice could accumulate on their braking systems, making it more difficult for drivers to slow down. Basically, the ice will decrease the car’s breaking power and lengthen vehicle stopping distances.

According to the company’s statement, the recall involves 2009 and 2010 model year Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix and 2008 and 2009 Scion xD vehicles, all equipped with 1.8 liter engines. Since the problem can only happen in cold weather, the recall only applies to cars sold in 19 states: Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

On Monday, Reuters reported that Toyota recalled 688, 314 Camrys in China, the largest recall in the country. The cars had a problem with the electric switches to their windows. Despite the large amount of cars affected, analysts say it shouldn’t have any long-term effects on the company’s success in China.

It seems as though car recalls have become very popular lately. Last week, Volkswagen also made a recall due to a transmission glitch. Only 13,500 cars were affected by that problem.

If your Toyota has been recalled, you can take it into a dealer to have a new intake air connector installed. The procedure should take about an hour, and you won’t be charged.
