The excitement surrounding the upcoming global event known as Fashion’s Night Out has the swelling rumblings of a massive flashmob about to converge on cities around the world, the effects of which cannot be predicted.
On September 10th, Vogue’s Editor in Chief Anna Wintour is hoping the masses will descend on cities from New York to Taiwan for one night of shop-til-you-drop frenzy in hopes of boosting the sagging fashion industry. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it!? Stores will stay open until 11pm and offer enticing events and appearances by celebrities and fashion industry royalty, all in the hopes of getting shoppers to spend a little cash. In NYC, Justin Timberlake will make a stop st Saks Fifth Avenue along with designers such as Peter Som and Donna Karen. Alexander Wang, Kate and Laura Mulleavy and Scott Sternberg are some of the headliners at Opening Ceremony.
At first I thought this was a highfalutin attempt by the out-of-touch fashion industry to beg consumers to help them out of their financial woes. But the more I read about it, the more it sounds like a pretty cool event. One in which even the most cash-strapped shopper can participate . If you’re skeptical, given the high-end designers listed above, check out some of these deals.
Target will have an Anna Sui pop-up shop so girls who have been anticipating the collaboration for months can finally get their hands on the affordably hip threads inspired by the CW’s Gossip Girl. At Bird in NYC, Vena Cava will be selling specially-made t-shirt dresses for $80 off the regular price. Still feeling pressured to buy, buy, buy? Well, let Vogue’s West Coast editor Lisa Love put you at ease. “It’s not about going out and spending $20,000 on a bag in a poor economy, she’s quoted as saying in the Los Angeles Times. “It’s about supporting the industry even just by buying some perfume or a T-shirt. Because if people aren’t supporting the industry, we’re losing jobs.”
That means you too, West Coasters. While NYC is getting most of the buzz, there will also be events in L.A. So go forth and shop. And when it’s all said and done, hopefully this fashion flashmob will leave more than empty champagne glasses in its wake.
