Jillian Michaels, best known for being the hard nosed, hard bodied trainer on The Biggest Loser, has slapped her name on yet another fitness product.
Perhaps fitness product isn’t the right word. Let’s try…hypocritical gimmick. There, that’s better.
Jillian has become one of the leaders in the fitness industry with her no nonsense attitude towards weight loss, diet and exercise. She makes no apologies for the fact its going to be hard, you might not like it, but in the end, it will be worth it.
Jillian’s newest fitness endeavor, in addition to her many books, DVDs, programs and websites, is a line of diet pills.
Yeah, you read that right.
At first, I had the highest of hopes, thinking perhaps they were at the very least, supplements. Perhaps some protein, or whole food extracts, which while I don’t find necessary, aren’t dangerous and don’t offer false promises- just a few extra nutrients.
No such luck. Her EXTREME QUICKSTART rapid weight loss program goes against everything she has ever preached, sold, or screamed in anyone’s face. Instead of preaching behavior change, educated choices and hard work- you can now just take a pill! The program includes a fat burner, a detoxifying cleanse, and an appetite controller. Stimulants, basically. No proven successes and a laundry list of side effects.
Such side effects include: headache, diarrhea, increased nervousness, accelerated heart rate and insomnia. Hmmm, Hydroxycut, anyone?
I asked the reader’s of my blog how they felt about it, and the response was unanimous: shame on you, Jillian.
Some highlights:
“When I bought her 30-Day Shred DVD I enjoyed that she didn’t pussyfoot around that exercise isn’t always fun. And if you want results you need to work for them. No pain, no gain. I appreciate that.
I recently saw her on the front of a magazine (I’m sorry that I can’t remember which one) promoting that you could lose up to 19 lbs in the first week if you follow her eating plan. Added to the diet pill nonsense, I think I will have to add her to the gimmick pile, regardless of her showing little rays of hope occasionally.” -Natasha
“What a freaking sell out she is!! She has this rockin’ body that she has CLEARLY worked incredibly hard for, and then she cops out to sell diet pills to put some extra cash in her pocket. Are you kidding me?!?! Her clients on the ranch should be laughing in her face… all the way to the gym.” -Brooke
“I’m really disappointed to hear this. I really liked her take on fitness and weight loss and now this is just selling out. Something similar that I really hate is how so many (if not all) of the fitness magazines have pages of ads at the back for “magic” weight loss pills. It bothers me so much!” -Amanda
“I looked at the fat burner pill label and it’s just extracts of things not proven (like grapefruit extract). Same story, unregulated diet pills. People will try to sell anything.” -dd
“That really bums me out. I’m neither a Jillian lover or hater, but I do enjoy a good butt kicking from her DVD’s once in awhile and get a kick out of her “persona” on Biggest Loser. In everything that she has done up to this point, she has encouraged everyone to just get out there and do it. And by do it I mean get up off their bottoms and get to work!!
A pill seems like a cop out and it’s quite disappointing that she would put her name on that kind of product.” -Ashley
What do you think?

I saw these pills recently at the store, and literally did a double take. Months ago I started working out seriously, and mostly due to Jillians videos and encouragement on them, along with her newsletter. This is really disappointing to me. Now when I do her vidoes and hear her say "If you want results you have to WORK" it will no longer encourage me. How ridiculous.

Unbelievable! I'm wondering how far she can go before the public stops eating this up and starts spitting this out.

Jillian also says she was a certified Physical therapist assistant. Actually, that is a lie. she was a physical therapy aide, never earned the 2 year degree to be a pta or took the state exam. She pushes her credentials beyond illegal limits to look bigger than she is. She is a fraud.

I recently purchased her newest book "Mastering Your Metabolism", and I am loving it. She preaches about how important organic foods are and the effects of our environment and the toxins on our hormones. Then I see these diet pills ... I am so disappointed. I was really enjoying following the information in this book and now I am really wondering whether or not all of it is a bunch of garbage. It is so frustrating to see what money can do.

I must have missed your post on your blog about this. I've heard people talking about this in blog land but this is the most I've read. I agree..... I had such respect for Jillian.... I even read her latest book.... what happened?? This stuff isn't what she preaches. I'm sad :( -A

Honestly, can you really be sitting here attacking Jillian? Most of the stuff that is in her new diet pill line are natural herbs that you would find in tea or other herbal remedies just joined together for maximal results. She is not advocating that you should take the pills and then sit around and consume processed food all day...it still fallows the line of eat healthy and get up an get moving, these pills give you that energy to do so. The side effects...? The same side effects regular coffee drinkers can face..just think about that.

Wow, I'm blown away about people's reactions to what some are calling 'diet pills'... Jillian has always advised on using a combination of quality multi-vitamins and other natural ingredients to accelerate weightloss results and enhance performance - in conjunction with good diet and exercise of course. Funny how people pick and choose what they wish to listen to rather than hear the entire story. Worth a read: http://www.fatimahodzic.com/health-fitness/jillian-michaels-is-the-truth.html

Why not read what Jillian has to say? http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=134999455926&ref=mf Hi guys, I am addressing your questions about why I created a line of weight loss supplements! First off, this isn't an endorsement deal. It's MY line. It was my idea and I created the products with the top bariatrics doctors in the world. And I do mean the world. These are some of the same doctors I have been working with for years to help me with my Biggest Loser contestants and my books — especially Master Your Metabolism. I have ALWAYS been an advocate of supplementation. Not as a total solution, but as a means to accelerate weight loss, and enhance your performance in every aspect of your life be it metabolic, immunity, antiaging and so on. For reference, you can take a look at Making the Cut (pp. 251-262), where I talked about which supplements work and which don't. In my latest book, Master Your Metabolism, I talked about natural ingredients that can boost metabolic function, like caffeine, vitamin C, and zinc. For years I have advocated the use of caffeine and white willow bark to increase performance in the gym and speed metabolism. I have recommended fiber blends to help curb appetite. I have referred people to different multivitamins, fat burners, protein powders, bars, drinks, etc. The problem for me was that every line out there has stuff in it I don't like. There are artificial colorings in the gel caps, or artificial sweeteners in the protein powders. There is soy in all the protein bars. Often the ingredients in the supplements aren't combined properly so they are not effective and so on. There is NOTHING, and I do mean NOTHING, harmful in these products. They are all natural. Have a look at the ingredients: Calorie Control: Yerba Mate leaf, Coffee (bean) Extract (Coffea arabica) - standardized to 70% natural caffeine ,Guarana (seed) Extract (Paullinia Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) ** Fat Burner: White Willow (bark) Powder (Salix alba), Grapefruit (fruit) Extract, Bitter Orange (fruit) Extract , Blood Orange (fruit) Extract, Sweet Orange (fruit) Extract, Coleus forskohlii (leaf) Extract, Forskohlin , Tribulus terrestris (root) Extract - standardized to 20% steroidal saponins ) - caffeine Cocoa (seed) Extract All Natural stuff, no drugs, no chemicals. They even have the perfect amount of caffeine. No more than 200 mg so you won't release stress hormone. Caffeine when supplemented properly has MANY health benefits. It improves cognitive function, fights Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, helps insulin resistance, reduces risk of liver cancer, and speeds metabolism by up to 6%. If you don't believe me check out this link and see what Dr. Oz has to say:http://www.coffeesage.com/archives/2008/02/good-news-on-coffee-from-oprahs-dr-oz/ With all that said, you still MUST eat right and work out. This stuff is just meant to support your body while training and accelerate your results. Ok, that’s all for now. Have a killer weekend!

kp- of course Jillian is going to endorse these, they are her products. of course she is going to say they are safe, even though her very own label lists the side effects I listed in the article. In addition, some of the ingredients on the ingredient lists are stimulants, hence the dangerous side effects. Safe? not quite. Helpful? no proof. Worth it? not even close. everyone- BTW- "natural" is a word that isnt regulated by the FDA, so basically, someone can say rat poison is "natural." so no more using that word as a defense for any food or drug.

Who cares if it's FDA approved. Alot of the time it just means the certification has been bought, not earned. Take a look at Premarin - pregnant mares urine used for birth control. Are you kidding me?? It's ridiculous to try to pull the FDA card here.

Just because something is natural or comes from a plant, doesn't mean it won't kill you. Ever heard of Hemlock? Grapefruit extract? Anyone who is taking Statin medications should not be ingesting grapefruits. That's a lot of people.

Fiona- just because the product is gross to you, doesn't mean its unhealthy. I don't get your point here. Natural isnt a defense, because anyone can legally say anything is natural. The FDA card is the perfect card to pull- that's the purpose of having the administration. Catherine- amen. Pretty sure tree frogs are natural too, but I wouldn't go around licking them. And the Statin point is perfect- just because some talking head on TV tells you its good for you doesn't mean it is. You have to actually look at each ingredient, not just assume that because its called natural, or has fruit in the name, its healthy for you.

it's not FDA approved because it's not a drug. it is a NATURAL supplement. The FDA doesn't regulate natural supplements. Are you people really that stupid? And if you are familiar with Jillian at all (her books, her radio shows) she has always advocated natural supplements to aid in fat metabolism.
18
Kelly Turner
October 16th, 2009 - 6:28:56 AM
Heather- first, there is really no need to call anybody stupid. second- thats my point. They dont regulate anything like that, so you don't know if it is safe. No one is saying that the FDA should or should not regulate it, they just dont regulate things like this which is why you need to check the labels for dangerous ingredients, and dangerous side effects- which these obviously have. As for her always advocating supplements, no one said she never has- the fact of the matter is these are marketted as fat burners and appetite controllers- diet pills. Its misleading and marketed as a get quick results weightloss program (which is actually in their name), which it isn't. Sure if you listen to her try and defend herself, it sounds as if they are used in conjunction with diet and exercise, but to the avergae person perusing the aisle, they see RAPID WEIGHT LOSS FAT BURNER and think, Bingo! let the headaches, nausea, and heart palpatations begin!

I agree with you Kelly. It was a total disappointment when I saw her diet pills as well. I've taken every "natural" diet pill ever made (not really, just sayin, it's alot!) and they are all the same, legal speed. No good can come from it. If you need energy to work out, why not take a B vitamin? Those who put you down in this post, just have no other intelligent way to debate this subject. Anyway, just wanted to say, I know what you're sayin!!!

I purchased those fat burner pills yesterday and on the box it says to include with exercise and a healthy diet...even on the biggest looser it says that those participants diet, exercise, and they also took some sort of supplement...These pills are intended to be used in conjunction WITH a good diet and exercise not as a miracle pill that allows you to sit on your butt and munch all day and still loose weight. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I don't think that Jillian is a sell out at all. She put out a product that she believed in. Jillian is dedicated to her cause and she knows that sometimes you just need a little extra help to loose weight. She is not promoting them as magic pills. You still need to get off your lazy butt, exercise and watch what you eat. She does not put her name on anything that she does not believe in. I for one am happy that she came out with a line of weight loss products because I trust her name. They are all natural and don't have a crazy amount of caffeine in them. You guys can all sit back in judge. Just because you don't personally believe in something doen not mean it is wrong or that Jillian is a sell out.

If you dont like the product then just dont buy it. I dont like Beer so i just wont buy it , but i dont go on there site and rag them about it ,and drinking has been proven to be deadly.Look at all the people that die every day by a drunk driver. I dont think her pills will make you pass out at the wheel and kill people. So if you dont like the pills dont buy them instead go for a jog or run !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bottom line people, anything you intake in excess or for a long period of time can be harmful weather is FDA approved or not. Jillian's supplements are just that, supplements that aid during training and that are not intended for use for the rest of your life. I think once people start trying it and bloging their awesome results it will be a great hit even if some of you claim it goes against what she preaches. People want to c results, thats all..Go Jillian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had my baby four months ago, and I put on 60lbs because I don't know why. I thought that that was the thing to do when you are pregnant. I am so sorry I did that, now I am trying to lose the weight and I am on the last 13lbs to go. The pills have helped me so much, they give me the energy to workout, and help me control my appetite, specially since I have a skinny husband who eats a lot of junk food. I mean we buy junk food at "Mas" a mexican whole sale food place, but he always picks like 12inch tall packs of tortillas of both kinds flour and corn, plus boxes of chocolates, little cakes, cookies, he is a junk food master and I am staring at all of these thing in my pantry, trying to lose weight. The pill is not a magic thing I started taking pills ONLY for 1 month they did not do a thing, but if you combine them with exercise and proper diet, they help out a lot. The work out is intensive and hard and to do it properly I need energy so the pills help me finish my workouts and most importantly they help me start the workouts. Hey KELLI you wrote the last 10 lbs was hard, how long did it take you to lose the last 10lbs. Please let me know so that I can be patient with myself and not get discourage. thanks.

I have all of Jillian's DVDs, and she is so motivational, especially when she is yelling 'don't phone it in, that's not what I am about!' I believe that Jillian is a natural motivator, who not only wants to make money (like everyone else), but genuinely cares about getting people in the best shape of their lives. As a 'skinny bitch', I have maintained that status working out with Jillian, but also by eating right (also have her books) and by taking natural supplements (almost all drugs have a natural resource). The problem is that people are lazy and they want quick results. Supplements don't help you unless you get off your ass. Go Jillian!!!!

Honestly I'm a little pissed at people right now. Bashing Jillian michaels. What would you do if someone came up to you and asked if you would be on the front cover of there product & give u 10 mill would u take or it leave? Shut up, u would take it. And yes it is all natural! Sooo just let it be. Jillian naturally cares about people and there well being otherwise she would not be so successful.

If you are using the FDA as an excuse to mean it is safe or unsafe, then that is purely an uneducated thing to say without doing your homework. Alli (someone here mentioned) is FDA approved. Read the warning signs of it. On 20/20 & Fox News they let the public know it causes cancer polps in rats. On the Mayo Clinic Website it tells you that Alli can cause liver damage and if you begin peeing blood, you should stop taking the drug and call your doctor, etc. The list goes on with the warnings. ANYONE who has been successful in working out and obtaining a healthy body will tell you that supplements are a part of the entire package. From vitamins, to supplements to creatine, to whey protein powder, etc. They are a PART of the solution and they work together to help you achieve and then maintain your goals. They are not a permanent solution, you use them as needed and decide what works best with your body. I have read comment after comment here yet NO ONE can tell me if they tried them. Are all of you in excellent shape? Has anyone here even tried this? The majority of the ingredients in her product are healthy supplements. She is so smart, she understands science, she knows how to knock 100 lbs off of someone in 6 weeks. Can anyone here do that? If ya can't say yes to these questions, then frankly I feel you don't have a leg to stand on in your debate about something you are not an expert on! Jillian is an amazing woman who has done NOTHING but good things for a lot of people and we have seen the proof again and again. So why in the world would you bash her? Give me VALID proof that a person who takes training seriously in the gym shouldn't use supplements. Go to your gym tomorrow and talk to every single trainer in there, find someone you respect and ask them. I am going to venture to bet that probably all of them will tell you that supplements are a necessary part of getting the body you desire. Go for it!

One more thing. Consistency is the key to success. If Jillian has helped a lot of people lose weight, then why in the world wouldn't you trust her? You can ASSUME she is selling supplements to make money and it is an unhealthy scam. But do you KNOW that for sure? For absolute and 100% certain she is ONLY doing this for the money and that the pills for a fact don't work and/or that they will harm you? You really have to have proof if you want to prove a point and get others to listen to you and believe you. Without proof, you just sound like a chicken with your head cut off running around trying to figure out where you are. It just seems to me that a woman with glowing skin and gorgeous shiny hair and a perfect body who has helped 100s of people lose weight knows what she is doing. She is sharing that with you all. Why not actually give her advice a whirl and THEN you can give us your feedback. It just certainly seems more dangerous to walk around with diabetes, excess weight, possible heart disease, etc than it is to take a supplement to enhance a healthy diet and exercise program. I mean weigh your options. . .which one is the more harmful? If it were easy to do it without any help, no one would be fat. Why not recognize what you've done hasn't worked, maybe there is a smarter alternative out there and an expert is trying to tell you that. Take the pills to your doctor, what does he/she say? Jillian says she believes in doing things the natural and healthy way, who is to say that supplements aren't natural? Vitamins are necessary, we accept that, so why not accept fat burners and her supplements? You people just make no sense! Please, get your facts about EVERYTHING, before you jump on here and rant about crazy stuff. Ie: The woman in the first post who couldn't remember the magazine Jillian was on where she said you could lose up to 19 lbs in a week. It was Woman First, I bought it, I read it, I understood it, I tried it and I lost 7 lbs and have not gained it back. It was just an article on foods (real foods) which aid the body naturally in weight loss, and what causes us to hold fat in our stomachs etc. Every single word in that article made complete sense. IE, it talked about how pollutants in our fruits do bad things and how the plastic in our containers and in certain suran wraps contain (something bad, forgot name) that can make you gain in your stomach and it explained WHY. Everything she says, she backs up with proof and evidence. Such as this works for this and this is why, etc. You all can't say that. You have no valid proof. It would do all of your bodys' a world of good to get off this site and do your homework. What you learn about science and your bodies could really help you!

I honestly don't think anyone on this site understands HOW to get into shape. If you knew then you would never criticize supplements. I just know enough about diet, exercise and nutrition to know it goes hand in hand. I do believe that is the problem here. You all don't get how to get into shape and stay there. Like I said, if it were easy and understandable, we'd all be in excellent shape. But the majority of folks don't understand how the body works. Plain and simple. Nursing degree? Many doctors are heavy, more nurses than not are overweight. I am not convinced that they teach you in nursing school what you need to know to have a strong and healthy physique. This is totally different and outside of your expertise. A trainer would know, a nurse just couldn't understand everything needed to do what it takes. From the exercises to the types of exercises to the heart rate required during that, to interval training, cardio, weight lifting, to rest periods (length) to proper stretching (when, how, how long), to massages, to supplements to when to exercise. To what foods contain what and what that does to your body (good and/or the bad), etc. Nurses know a lot, but this stuff. I have never been in the health care industry, but I bet even I can challenge you and up you on the body and how it works.

Kelly Turner (author of this mess) will probably delete this. But her book says, "Eat Fried Chicken and still lose weight." Kelly, is that the way we are suppose to live our lives? I mean the 8 grams of trans fat, my heart says, "No thank you". Jillian wants me to take a supplement loaded with nurtrients. That sounds so much healthier and my heart loves the sound of that, so does my skin. What we put into our bodies makes or breaks us in so many ways. Cells completely renew themselves every couple of months and my skin, eyes, and hair would look so much prettier with extra supplements than with fried chicken. Unless you are frying it in a healthy oil, still with only needing about 2 tbs of oil a day (and only certain kinds) I don't think that sounds very much like fried chicken. Or is that a scam to get us to buy your book since you feel you need to bash Jillian in order to sell your book. I mean, why not just promote the good in it rather slamming Jill. She isnt' slamming you or anyone in order to sell her product. She isn't vendictive. She has enough good and belief in what she is doing that bashing is not necessary and not her style. You aren't doing yourself any favors by acting nasty on here. And you also don't sound very educated if you are allowing this to take place on this website. Shame on you KELLY!

what book am I trying to sell? I put up the responses I recieved to a question I asked to the entire internet- and it was not biased because not a single person said they were behind these products. supplements are unecessary, and usually unsafe, and I have not seen any research (besides provided by her company) to indicate otherwise. Sorry, but I am not easily convinced because her face is recognizable to the public

First off go to Google and type in, "is supplementation necessary" and then read what the experts have to say. You will find an abundance of proof from scientists and doctors who back up Jillian. Asking regular people on the Internet has no weight on the issue as they don't know anything other than the fact that they are lazy and don't feel like doing their homework. They are just talking off the top of their heads because they don't know any better. They aren't fit, they aren't healthy and they don't understand how to get there. Anyone at all in the industry of body building, training, etc will tell you that supplements are necesary. I promise you that! Here is just one paragraph which may help you a bit in understanding why. First, it helps to understand that everything that happens in our bodies, from the beating of our hearts to the growth of a fingernail, happens through a series of complicated metabolic reactions that require specific nutrients. Without sufficient amounts of these various vitamins and minerals, these processes can become slowed, abnormal, or impaired. Eventually, they may even stop altogether. So, can you get all the nutrients you need simply by eating a healthy diet? Yes...in theory. Our ancestors did it. But our food supply isn't what it used to be. The nutrients in our soil have been depleted from years of pesticides and pollution. Additionally, the packaged and processed foods that are so common in our culture are not only nutrient void; they actually rob our bodies of vital nutrients. Consequently, even a person who tries to eat with nutrition as a primary concern may still be lacking in some of the most basic nutrients. I believe supplementation is essential for maintaining a healthy body.

Kelly, my mistake you are not the same Kelly whom is selling the book I was referring to. It is a woman named Kelly Glass and I mistook her for you. She was on another website criticizing Jillian in the exact same way as this website and then she was promoting her book, "Eat Fried Chicken and still be Thin" All at the same time.

I agree 100% with Kelly Turner. I just found this site today after I saw Jillian's ad in my Oxygen Magazine and I was crushed. She has been someone I have respected and admired for many years. I posted my displeasure on her Facebook fanpage and subsequently received a few angry fan(antic) messages. :) Her association with a FAT BURNER/DIET/WEIGHT LOSS supplement is such a disappointment to me, my clients and many of my peers. The way the product is marketed - "EXTREME QUICKSTART Rapid Weight Loss Program""should give any clear-headed thinking person an indication that it is pure snakeoil salesmen. My point is: You do not need this crap in your body. Eating "as close to the earth" as possible is the way to be healthy. Nature's Pharmacy is fruits, veggies, whole grains and the like, not concoctions of stimulants, primarily of a number of xanthine-type stimulants (i.e., caffeine and theobromine); specifically: guarana, coffee, kola nut, and cocoa, citrus products (orange and grapefruit extracts), cayenne pepper and willow bark extract. Anyone who buys or believes such nonsense is very naive. Think Critically people.
