9/9/09 – What Does it Mean?

090909-1

Last year we had 8/8/08, and 7/7/07 the year before that. But today’s special numerals, 9/9/09, mark the last single-digit date for the next 92 years. (The next one is 1/1/2101.) And for math nerds, the date falls on a Wednesday in September, both of which have 9 letters. September 9 also is the 252nd day of the year. 2+5+2 = …you guessed it, nine! In addition, if you multiply any single-digit number by 9, the resulting two digits add up to 9.

So the big question is – what are you gonna do about it?

You could get hitched. It’s a hugely popular date for weddings, since it’s easy to remember, fun for invitations and has a kind of fateful ring to it. CNN reports that it’s especially meaningful in China, where the pronunciation of “nine” sounds similar to the word “longlasting.”  In Vegas, many hotels and casinos are offering discounts on quick ceremonies.

For those of us single folk, there are other options to celebrate this day-that-we-want-to-have-meaning-even-though-it-doesn’t. Hotels.com is running a sale for rooms priced $99 or less, ending today.

You could  also Twitter with Republicans, who are having the “largest Twitter tea party ever” at 9 pm EST. Wow, I’m not even going to touch that one.

And there’s also a new Beatlemania, since the Beatles’ entire collection (now digitally remastered) comes out today and their special edition of Rock Band hits stores tomorrow. If nothing else, take a listen to their song ”Revolution 9,” on which a man’s voice repeats, “Number nine, number nine, number nine.”

Maybe I”ll have nine margaritas.
