Joe Wilson Shouts “You Lie!” at Obama

In a tactful display of class and respect, Republican Representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina shouted “You lie!” at President Obama during the President’s speech last night.

The New York Times reports that the outburst, which was in response to Mr. Obama’s statement that Democratic health proposals would not cover illegal immigrants, was very loud and shocked all the other members of Congress. Democrats said it showed lack of respect for the office of the presidency.

After the speech, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel asked the Republicans to help identify the heckler and urge him to make an apology, fast. “No president has ever been treated like that. Ever,” Emanuel said.

Even some Republicans admitted Wilson’s behavior was in poor form “I think we ought to treat the president with respect,” said Republican Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, “and anything other than that is not appropriate.” People around the country are pissed, too; check out this new website Joe Wilson is Your Pre-Existing Condition, which generates amusing insults.

Wilson’s office did later issue an apology:“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the president’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the president’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility.”

Whatever, Joe. We expect this from crazy randos at town hall meetings…but from a Congressman. Let’s not forget South Carolina is home of the Confederacy.
