Some TV shows labor on for years and years well after they jump the shark. Yet others are cut down in the prime of life no matter how great they are. And today we are here to celebrate those.

5. My Name is Earl

Okay, this one had several seasons, but nonetheless it was cancelled before it had a chance to wrap itself up. And as it was one of the few sitcoms that I didn’t find completely wooden, that makes me sort of sad. That and the fact that it was so clearly shot in LA even though it was supposed to be set in the south. That was fun.

4. My So Called Life

Who here does not remember Jordan Catalano?! Is is possible that this show had only one season? It launched Claire Danes! It perfectly captured the Gen X high school experience. A travesty, I tell you.

3. Deadwood

I admit it: I saw men and cowboys and goldrush and I thought, ‘boring.’ Then I watched two episodes and thought, ‘Holy shit.’ It’s really, really effing good. The good part: you get three seasons of it before it was cancelled. The bad part, when season three is over you will for sure be left wanting more.

2. Freaks and Geeks.

Why didn’t I watch this one again? Watching this you know why Judd Apatow is the super power he is today. The sweet, uncomfortable, nostalgic, awkward pathos of the characters. Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, et al before they were who they are. AND for once a main female character (shock!). That Freaks & Geeks was only one season long is nothing short of criminal. See also, Undeclared.

1. Arrested Development.

The king of unjustly cancelled shows, I came to this one late as well. It is, quite simply, stunningly good. The smart, acerbic wit. The attention to detail. The respect for the viewers. All I can say is do yourself a favor and watch this one immediately. Sure, they went a little nuts at the end of season three, but that is because they knew they were being cancelled and they were lobbying not to be. Can you blame them?
