Social Media: Career Promoter or Career Killer?

mys-1

By now, you probably are familiar with the cardinal rule of Facebook and Myspace: not to friend your parents. Not only will you get tagged in photos of yourself with crusty Aqua Net mall bangs and a prom date with an obvious aversion to Clearasil and height, but you may even get asked to explain your enigmatic status updates that end with “FML” or who you are talking about when you say, “That’s what she said.”

However, having your parents know “What’s on your mind?” may be the least of your worries, as if your employer catches your latest status update or tweet, it could cost you your job. Assuming that your complaints about your job will not fall on unintended eyes is not safe given the growing accessibility of the net to all levels of society. While individuals are now able to cross-promote, job search and network via Twitter and Facebook, seemingly innocent pissing and moaning can rub higher ups the wrong way.

To avoid having to file for unemployment, Web marketer/blogger Paul Wilson has shared the Top 10 Tweets to Get You Fired, including my two personal favorites:

5. “Also I’m really bummed that I’m working today, i asked off so i could study but my boss is a ******* **** ***** ***** who can’t read.”

8. “smoking weed at work is so [EDITED] great :)

Oops. And I thought Ashton and Demi were the only ones who said stupid things on Twitter.

While your mom may not be a “friend,” she did know best when she said, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all,” at least when it comes to talking about your job online.
