I hate it when people make me wait so I’m just gonna spit it out: it’s vinegar! Commonly used in recipes and on sandwiches and salads, regular ol’ vinegar, the stuff that’s been around since the beginning of time, has been popping up more and more in weight-loss studies thanks to it’s metabolism-boosting properties.

One particularly encouraging study comes out of Japan, where of 175 participants consumed just 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily (that’s not much more than you’d normally put on a sandwich or salad) for 12 weeks and at the end of the study they all had significantly lower body weights, BMI, and visceral fat (the gross internal stuff) levels.

Experts aren’t sure exactly why vinegar has such an effect, although they’re pretty sure it has something to do with its acetic acid content, the stuff that makes vinegar so sour. And I read in a magazine article that it doesn’t matter what kind of vinegar (it doesn’t have to be the apple cider variety) since they all have acetic acid and are low in calories, low in carbs, and naturally fat-free.

So stock up your kitchen and start flavoring your sandwiches, salads, and other meals with vinegar. Need cooking ideas? Get awesome recipes here.

Fact: Did you know that vinegar is basically just really fermented wine? It was officially recognized way back in the year 1580.
