It seems a little ridiculous that MTV still puts on a Video Music Awards, considering they haven’t aired music videos with any regularity in over a decade. As stars accept their moonmen, I realized that I hadn’t seen a single winning video. Do people even see videos anymore? Do teens seek them out on the internet?

Even still, the VMAs seem to be alive and well, based on all the buzz and twittering about this year’s show. The most talked about moment is certainly when Kanye rudely stole the mic from Taylor Swift when she tried to accept her very first VMA. Luckily, Beyonce graciously gave her back the stage when she won her own award. If you didn’t already think Beyonce was the coolest, classiest lady ever – now there’s no question.

The main reason to tune in, of course, was for the performances. Green Day and Muse were both rockin. Taylor sang “Belong With Me” from a New York subway train and then from the top of an  iconic yellow cab outside of Radio City, surrounded by fans with arms in the air. It was really energetic, and I have to give the girl points for wearing a somewhat modest red dress. She’s a fun, cute 19 year-old – and not a little sexpot.

Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” was just baffling. She attempted to be deep and operatic, wearing a bizarre white outfit and ending the song covered in fake blood. I mean, I get the visual metaphor…but really?

And Pink is a total effing badass; she sang “Sober” while doing a crazy acrobatic stunt at the very top of the theater.  There’s a metaphor that actually makes sense – and showed off her rockin bod.

And let’s not forget Jay-Z and Alicia Key’s rocking out NYC with their show ending performance of “Empire State of Mind.”  Wait, why is Lil Mama on the stage?
