Linda McMahon announced today she is resigning from her position as CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc., to run for Senate in her home state of Connecticut, according to the Los Angeles Times. McMahon, a Republican, will look to pinfall Democrat Christopher Dodd in the 2010 election – and it will be no easy task; Dodd was elected all the way back in 1980, and is the ninth most senior of all US Senators.
McMahon has been CEO of the WWE since 1997, alongside her husband, WWE Chairman and ringmaster Vince McMahon. Together they have worked to make the organization more family-friendly (insert redneck joke here), and she’s had quite a bit of success. (That could certainly help her win votes from conservatives.) She’s also well-respected on Wall Street. Being rich and a pseudo-celebrity also can’t hurt.
McMahon’s likely opponents for the Republican nomination include former U.S. Representative Rob Simmons and former Ambassador to Ireland Tom Foley. It seems that the WWE and politics DO mix; former Connecticut governor and Senator Lowell Weicker is on the WWE’s board of directors. Who knew they watched this crap in Connecticut?
Vince McMahon intends to take over his wife’s position as CEO, and he has plans to launch a cable network and push harder to get his WWE stars in more movies. Yes! We need as many new incarnations of Daddy Day Care as possible.
