Kenny vs. Spenny: Ball humor, Canadian-style

Sometime last year, I believe, some lovely friends asked me if I knew who Kenny and Spenny were. When I affirmed that I did not, their eyes lit up. ‘Oh boy, you are in for a treat.’

Kenny Hotz and Spencer Rice are two Canadian comedians with a half-hour show devoted to the premise that they are the best of friends and the worst of enemies. They have weekly (or episode-ly, rather) competitions about ridiculous things like who can blow the biggest fart and who can eat the most meat. The winner gets bragging rights; the loser has to suffer a humiliation of the winner’s choice.

Now, I know, this sounds like the absolute worst kind of sophomoric toilet humor imaginable. And frankly I can’t deny it – it’s not exactly Oscar Wilde. But dick jokes though they may be, they are funny ones. The thing is that Kenny basically always comes up with a way to cheat. And is also fairly disgusting. Spenny, on the other hand, is much more metro and uptight, and basically never has any hope of winning unless Kenny defaults, which he sometimes does.

It used to be that you could only see Kenny vs. Spenny on Youtube (there are still a ton of episodes or parts of episodes to be found there), but it is now carried on Comedy Central in the states – in the wee oh-so-wee hours of the morning–if the usually edited language included and continuous rotation of Girls Gone Wild commercials that I skim through on my DVR are anything to go by.

The fifth season is running right now (I preferred the fourth, truthfully), and if you like things like Superbad and seeing guys teabag each other, then I highly recommend you check it out.
