11 Year-Old Public Speaker Dalton Sherman on TODAY Show

Dalton-Sherman-1

Dalton Sherman of Dallas has already become famous for his public speaking, and he’s only 11 years old. After his speech became a sensation on YouTube, he appeared on both Oprah and The Ellen Degeneres Show – and this morning he was also featured as one of Jenna Hager’s new education segments on The TODAY Show.

“The first time I ever gave a speech was in first grade,” Dalton said. Then in fourth grade, his teacher Ms. Redmond inspired him to keep up the public speaking because he was very talkative in class. “She noticed that that was my gift, so she said, ‘Hey, I’m gonna put you in a speech contest.’” As part of the competition, Dalton had to give a speech in front of all the Dallas public school teachers. One teacher even approached him afterward and said that he inspired her to keep teaching when she was considering quitting her job. “That was really meaningful for me,” he said.

Despite his amazing gift for oratory, Dalton is a pretty normal kid who enjoys basketball and hanging out with his friends. He hopes to be a news anchor when he grows up - maybe a president, but probably a news anchor. He warned Matt Lauer that he might be taking over his job someday. Matt and I both believe it’s a very real possibility!
