The-Good-Wife-1

CBS’ new legal drama The Good Wife is exactly what you expect it to be. Julianna Marguiles’ Alicia Florrick is probably the most likable character on TV, sweet and positive yet tough enough to slap her philandering Senator husband (Chris Noth), an obvious “ripped from the headlines” version of Eliot Spitzer.

Since her hubby isn’t really bringing home the bacon anymore, Alicia turns to the law degree she hasn’t used in many years and snags a job as a junior associate. The “junior” part doesn’t fit so well; Alicia cringes when her colleague Cary (the adorably boyish Matt Czuchry) compares her to his mom. In addition, tough senior partner Diane Lockheart (Christine Baranski – love her!) accuses Alicia of being “a junior associate who doesn’t think she’s a junior associate.” Alicia also realizes that the job isn’t even secure; she and Cary are basically competing for one position and she’s going to have to prove herself.

Luckily, she does just that with a tough pro bono case involving a mother who is accused of murdering her husband. Since jury was deadlocked, Alicia discovers new evidence and gets a chance to pursue a new defense strategy (a nice parallel to her own second chance).

The problem with The Good Wife is that it’s still a legal show. Each week we’ll still be in the courtroom trying cases like on every other legal show – and I’m not sure if that’s enough for me.
