When I first saw this headline, I was prepared to read a horrific story about teen girls forced to have sex or something…so luckily, it’s not that bad. According to the New York Times, Millburn High, the top-ranked school in New Jersey, is under fire for its senior girls’ annual hazing rituals. The juiciest of them is the “Slut List,” which ranks and crassly describes a dozen or more of the incoming freshman girls. This year, “hundreds” of copies were passed out to the student body.

Here’s my favorite part of the story: “We’ve had girls — which is one of the bad things — obsessed that their names are on it, and girls who were upset that they didn’t make the list,” said the principal, William Miron. “It’s basically vulgar.”

The Scarlet Lettery sexual hazing isn’t the only ritual at Millburn; seniors also blow whistles in girls’ faces and push them into lockers, leaving them afraid to come back to school the next day.

The incidents were made public after a handful of parents complained to school officials and a hazing discussion went around a private email group for mothers. Parents in the e-mail group considered this year’s events to be worse than usual, but no one has been punished because none of the students will name names, and none of the teachers reported seeing any hazing.

What do you think? Is this a big deal, or just mean girls being mean girls?

it's mean girls being mean girls, which kinda is a big deal: one traumatizing experience in high school can quite literally change someone's life for the worse forever. and it happens all the time.

Come on people it is just a list. That is the problem with the kids today. They are too soft. Parents baby them too much now adays. "We don't want to their feelings, they are sensitive, yada, yada, yada"

lol...Senior Girls that resort to this type of behavior tells me .... That they are insecure and have low self esteem about themselves. So in order to feel good about themselves or feel powerful is to rank on younger girls.

I go to MHS, this is not a lie. This story is very true, but no to this extent. Pushing into lockers is usually not intentional. Regarding the "slut list" I've heard freshmen say they wanted to be on it. Because they didn't care, and all 21 of those girls will be hazers. All of them. There are plenty other school where the hazing is much worse and I cannot imagine why this stupid list is making several news channels, when in other places all over the country, physical harm is coming to the freshmen.

"The Slut LIst" - an ill-fated effort at irony, hyperbole gone wrong, unimaginative, crass, useless, and pathetic. College Admissions directors will no doubt, look twice, at any Millburn High applicant this coming year - Home of "The Slut List"... Well done girls...you've managed to turn yoursleves into the Village Idiots overnight by using the term SLUT as a codeword for COOL...any self-respecting college should diss you simply for being really, really boring, unintelligent, and self-defeating! How's that for an OOPS!

Even if any of them do get accepted to college, these gals still have a lot of GROWING UP to do before that. Also if any have "Facebook" or "Myspace" pages with nasty behavior on them..LQQK OUT ! " As these are becoming the first places College admissions offices , employers etc. look at anymore. The parents and them need to google themselves and see what kinds of crap comes up. SHEESH.

After reading the article of a group of young girls hazed at a New Jersey High School, I was shock and offended that there are such cruel traditions going on in the U.S high schools today. This is so inappropriate on so many levels parents should never encourage a child to degrade and humiliate other’s for popularity. I find it sick and disturbing that the N.J parents are allowing this behavior to escalate to such extreme measures. It scares me that the N.J parents who are raising these cretin children are working in are economy, maybe that is why were struggling in America. People like the N.J parents and others in America maybe have never grew up them self’s, which maybe one of are reasons why are economy is struggling because people don’t know how to separate business and personal life; they only know what their parents taught them when they were young. Understand it is a pattern and it should be stop. If these children have already developed nasty and ugly behaviors now imagine how they are going to treat our economy in the future
