It’s clear that when Drew Barrymore directs a movie, she goes all out. For her new movie Whip It, Drew has gone on a cross-country roller derby promotional tour complete with packed appearances at skating rinks, singing at a Chicago Cubs game surrounded by the ladies of a local roller derby league and some of the craziest looks we’ve seen Drew wear in a long time.
While I’m not a fan of the black-tipped blonde hair, it’s hard to judge Drew who has such a free-spirited approach to fashion and life. On a recent appearance on the Jay Leno show she divulged her motives behind the new do:
“Life is too short not to change it up.”
But, with that said, I can speak the truth about her Whip It promo tour wardrobe without my love for Drew being misunderstood. I hate it. I understand that it is an extension of the movie, but for the most part it’s been pretty awful. Like the pleated school girl skirt she wore paired with a red plaid button-up. I like the top, hate the skirt. It reminds me of something straight out of Hot Topic. And her pink and black striped tie paired with black suit jacket and jeans which she wore to a Cubs game in September would look more appropriate on punk-rock poser Avril Lavigne.
Even worse, the turquoise tights she wore under a gray dress and denim jacket during a press junket in Toronto. Another bomb from Toronto, the yellow and black dress she wore to her film’s premiere at the film festival. For me, the one bright spot was the green plaid suit paired with black leather driving gloves and a Rolling Stones t-shirt that she wore during a stop in Detroit.
Rock on, Drew! I may not like it, but something tells me you don’t care what other people think. And that’s what makes me love you so.

Plus, that's the look the movie's aiming for. You may not enjoy the Hot Topic demographic, but a lot of people do. So good for Barrymore to take a risk and wear clothes that may not be hip, but are fun and colorful. After all, there are worse things in the world then looking like you walked out of a Hot Topic (i.e. looking like you walked out of an Urban Outfitters).
