How refreshing to have actual colors in our fall wardrobes this year. In a season usually dominated by drab blacks and browns and grays, this year neon colors are front and center. However, this trend does take a little more finessing than the basics of seasons past. You certainly don’t want to look like a walking glow stick.

The trick is to pair one neon item with more subtle pieces. Perhaps, if you’ve got the body and confidence to rock a skin-tight skirt, try a bright blue bodycon mini from Topshop for only $37. Pair it with a long black boyfriend blazer, t-shirt or tank and flats and you’ve got  great outfit.

A good place to look for neon basics is American Apparel. They’ve long carried t-shirts, leggings, bodysuits and more in all manner of fluorescent colors. Check out their “Highlighter” tees ($28), in all those acid colors you remember from the eighties: pink, orange, yellow and green.  Paired with jeans and flats this would be an easy casual outfit for everyday business like going to the grocery store or taking the dog for a walk. If you’ve got your original eighties neons stored in the back of your closet, now is the time to bring them into the light.

Of course, shoes are always a good way to ease into a daring new trend. Check out piperlime.com for shoes that are on point without being too outrageous, like purple booties from Michael Antonio for $60. Add a little black dress and you’ve got a hot date outfit. Or try neon accessories from a clutch to jewelry. Forever 21 would be a good place to score some inexpensive pieces.

This fall, the electricity has been turned way up. So don’t be left out in the dark. Get in on the neon trend while it’s hot! Just don’t blow a fuse, or your budget, on an all-neon wardrobe!
