Oh God, is this emerging goth trend some sort of twisted side-effect of Twilight mania? I’m really hoping it’s not, but with all the vampire shows and movies out these days, I can’t rule it out as the inspiration for the new gothic look responsible for the dark lips and pale faces on starlets everywhere.
At the intersection of 5th Avenue and Six Feet Under are two of the trendiest goths. Once goodie-goodie Upper East Siders, it seems Leighton Meester and Taylor Momsen have been bitten by something a little more unseemly. The two should star in a new Gossip Girl spin-off, tentatively titled Gothic Girl, perhaps?
This all just seems phony. Hello! When a magazine dresses Kim Kardashian up in a black bowl-cut wig and black lipstick and sells her as the poster girl for the latest goth trend, you know something is terribly amiss. Could there be anyone less gothic than Kim K.? I mean the girl is all perfect hair, bronze makeup and Louis Vuitton bags. Not exactly a love match for Marilyn Manson.
The only starlet who seems to be truly living the goth life these days is poor Mischa Barton. At least her recent darker image while out on the streets of New York has an air of authenticity to it. Afterall, it’s been a tough year for Mischa. And with the abrupt cancellation of her new show after only a couple of episodes, it’s no wonder she’s a little down these days.
With more Twilight movies due out in the next few years, who knows how long this depressing trend will last. I guess we’ll just have to sit tight and watch while all the Hollywood teeny boppers play dress-up.
