If you’ve ever taken an exercise class, you are used to this scene: everyone sweating and stumbling, trying to follow along with an instructor screaming about how much fun you are having (what room is she in?)  while hopping around like she’s on crack. It’s not motivating; it’s either hilarious or annoying.

Enter IntenSati: the newest form of mind/body exercise from founder Patricia Moreno sweeping the nation. Moreno, a recovered bulimic (what’s up, sister!) and reformed compulsive exerciser, developed the program, which combines intense exercise with positive affirmations and motivational speak designed to shape up your body, and your spirit.

At any given class she teaches (if you can get in, there is a waiting list) you can join dozens of sweaty exercisers holding intense yoga poses while shouting “I will succeed!” and “I am strong!”

One of the biggest reasons I exercise is to burn off stress and anxiety. People swear by this class for that exact reason. Whatever your problem: money, work, kids, whatever – your workout will leave you feeling energized and strong enough to tackle anything.

Yoga is often described as a “mind/body” exercise, letting go of all cognitive thoughts and fusing your mind with body, truly living in the moment.  IntenSati is also mind body exercise, but a bit different – while you are still focusing on the moment and the physical, its the cognitive thoughts that keep you centered. You use your mind to propel you through your exercises, helping you feel motivated and as though you can do anything. Yes, this means even finishing the hardcore class.

The first definition has always been my issue with yoga: I’m not good at slowing my thinking. I get bored, honestly. I don’t want to be silent and reflective when working out – I want to push and yell and grunt and do things I never thought I could do. And if it takes a class that forces me to yell at myself that “I will!” even when my body tells me I can’t, sign me up.

Meh.... I never really understood yoga so this doesn't turn me on. Too slow and too much breathing. This class sounds like Lamaze with a motivational speaker (you). -A
