The beloved children’s book Where the Wild Things Are has been made into what looks like a fantastic big screen adaptation. Literally, I tear up when I watch the trailer, with the sounds of Arcade Fire guiding Max’s journey into an imaginary world of monsters and friendship.
Now, the ubër-cool boutique, Opening Ceremony, has a line of apparel and jewelry inspired by the characters of Where the Wild Things Are.
Too bad no one can afford it. Well, to be fair, the jewelry is actually reasonably priced for a store like Opening Ceremony. And it’s really darn cool! The clothing store collaborated with the movie’s director, Spike Jonze, to come up with pieces based on characters and iconography from the film. The rabid shopaholic and hopeless sentimentalist that I am, I’m inclined to purchase a piece as a tribute to the fond memories I’ve attached to the book. But, I won’t. No, way. Instead, I’ll stick with my old beat up copy of the book that I had as a kid…that is, if my mom can find it. Therein lies the true core of my childhood memories of the story. Not in some overpriced piece of jewelry manufactured in conjunction with a big movie.
The apparel, consisting of a lot of faux fur is also amazing. I bet Rachel Zoe had a fit when she saw it given her penchant for fur vests. But, alas, I will not buy that either. Even though the Douglas motorcycle jacket and Carol flare coat will probably haunt my dreams for months to come. And, I certainly will not buy the adult-size Max jumpsuit, a near identical replica of the one worn my the little boy in both the book and film. I won’t be buying it because it’s over $600. And…it’s also sold out. Apparently, for a lot of people, owning a Wild Things souvenir has no price limit.
Looks like there will be a lot of Maxes running around this Halloween.
