So you’re standing in the candy aisle at the local grocery store, staring at hundreds of black boxes and orange bags full of miniature chocolate bars, gummy eyeballs, and candy spiders trying to figure out what to give out to your trick or treaters this year. Here’s a top 10 list I came up with based on a couple of interesting articles (see them here and here) plus my own personal opinion.

  1. Miniature Snickers Bars. Who doesn’t love a Snickers?
  2. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Singles. Or, better yet, Reese’s Peanut Butter Pumpkins.
  3. Mini M&M’s. Everybody loves them, plus the little bag makes you feel like you have a lot.
  4. Other Miniature Candy Bars. Mini Kit Kats, 3 Musketeers, Nerds, and Mike & Ike’s are always popular.
  5. Pop Rocks. They’re tasty and so much fun.
  6. Sweet and Sour or HOT. Lemon Heads, Sour Patch Kids, Warheads, and Hot Tamales.
  7. Gummies. Gummy eyeballs, gummy worms, gummy coffins, gummy bears. They all work.
  8. Anything Full Size. For obvious reasons!
  9. Anything Unique. Part of the fun as a kid is getting candy you’ve never seen before.
  10. Candy Corn and those cute little candy corn pumpkins!

And, just for fun, here are some crazy statistics about which houses give out which candy (can this really be accurate?):

Houses with black shutters = 77% more likely to hand out Kit Kats
Houses with two stories = 37% more likely to hand out Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Houses with brown doors = 32% more likely to hand out mini Hershey’s Chocolate bars
