A recent poll has named 16-year-old Miley Cyrus as 2009’s worst celebrity influence–and many are pointing to her provocative pole dance at the Teen Choice Awards as the event that clinched her that title. According to the New York Post, AOL’s JSYK (Just So You Know) poll asked 44,594 people their opinions about who’s corrupting America’s youth. Here’s the video of Miley’s pole dance during her performance of “Party in the USA” – see what you think:
Come on, people. She barely touches the pole! And sure, her shorts are pretty short–but overall Miley’s not really baring all that much skin. However, she does seem to have a penchant for taking scantily-clad photos (Yowza, Google Image Search). Is she really a bad influence though? Color me conflicted.
Coming in at #2 on the list was Britney Spears…which might be valid, given all her shenanigans in the past few years. But honestly, I’m not really sure if Britney is even worthy of making such a list. We all know she’s gone off the deep end. Is she really even capable of influencing us? And maybe teens and tweens were huge Britney followers 10-years ago, but I’m willing to bet that most of her die-hard fans are creepy 20somethings now. It’s all about Miley and Taylor Swift now, puh-lease.
Taylor actually ranked at the other end of the list, as the second best celebrity influence. Selena Gomez topped the chart, which also included goody-goodies Nick Jonas and Emma Watson.

Are they nuts?? What I saw is a group of young people exhibiting thier youth. What I saw was a girl holding on to a pipe for balance. If you think that was "pole dancing", well, how niaive can you get? I suggest you go to a strip club, see some real pole dancing and then view the video again. Labeling her as a bad influence based on this video is just wrong. BGesides, how many of the kids that she appeals to know what "pole dancing" is? That doesn't say much for the kids. Shame on all of you. By the way, I am 65, hardly a kid.

Selling records and marketing herself is what she is doing. However, what makes it very sad indeed is that pre-teens and teens her age think that this is a normal thing to be doing running around in outfits as she does, etc. But regardless of my opinion or anyone else's opinion the underlying factor here is indecency. But then, she is Hollywood and who cares about movie stars, singers anyway. Not the average person.

For the whole minute or 30 seconds or so that Miley and "the pole" were together, she held on to it the majority of the time. She held on to it and bent down? All of these people need to take a look at their judgement towards her and realize they probably have done way worse in their day. I'm sure had she have set in a chair onstage without her legs crossed someone would have said she looked "inviting". Get a life people, seriously.

Seriously? Pole Dancing? Miley was holding onto a piece of metal to keep her balance. DUH! So many people trash her, yes she does not always make the best choices, but she is a teenage girl! They are entitled to make some mistakes. Yes her outfit is a little skimpy, but again, TEENAGE GIRL! Personally, I think people should remember that Miley is just a kid and give her some space. Parents are so slack these days that they would rather blame the media or diet for their own childrens behaviour when in fact it is the parents responsibilty to supervise and guide their children through right and wrong and that inculdes what information they absorb.
