Dogs are know for being loyal — but one pooch in Iraq took it to the next level. Nubs the Dog (named because of a horrible practice of slicing off dogs’ ears to make them tougher) took a liking to Marine Brian Dennis, and followed him across 75 miles of Iraqi desert. Dennis was so inspired that he has written a new children’s book about it, titled: Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle. Check out the video from The TODAY Show:

Though stray dogs are common in Iraq, there was something special about Nubs. “We just bonded with him as soon as we met him,” Dennis said. Whenever Dennis returned to Nubs’ fort, he would be greeted with the dog’s usual enthusiasm. However, one time, Nubs was hurt — someone had stabbed him in the side with a screwdriver, and the wound became infected. “He looked terrible,” Dennis said. “We didn’t think he was going to make it.” Dennis took the dog home with him, applied antibacterial ointment and let Nubs sleep with him — and he survived.
From that moment, Nubs wouldn’t let Dennis go; a few days later, the mutt found the marines 75 miles from the fort. “I go running out there and he just jumps up on me and was going crazy,” Dennis said. However, keeping a dog is against the rules in the Marines — so Dennis got some help from people back home to send Nubs to the US. “It was an escape, and now it’s a friend.”
