Yesterday’s tragic rampage at Fort Hood resulted in the deaths of 13 people. According to CNN, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a psychiatrist who worked in a hospital at the base, allegedly shot 12 soldiers and one civilian at the largest military base in the country.

But it could have been even worse, had it not been for police officer Kimberly Munley. The Huffington Post reports that the base’s top commander, Lieutenant General Bob Cone, credits her for stopping the shootout. Munley and her partner, who had been directing traffic at the time of the call, responded within three minutes.

“She happened to encounter the gunman. In an exchange of gunfire, she was wounded but managed to wound him four times,” Cone said. “It was an amazing and aggressive performance by this police officer.”

Munley was also injured, but was later reported in stable condition. The hero cop spent Thursday night phoning fellow officers to let them know she was fine and to find out about casualties in the attack — the deadliest ever on a military base in the United States, Cone said.

Munley’s Twitter profile says, “I live a good life….a hard one, but I go to sleep peacefully @ night knowing that I may have made a difference in someone’s life.” Yesterday, she made a difference in countless people’s lives.
