military-eating-1Applebees and other restaurant chains around the country are offering free meals to veterans in celebration of Veterans Day. According to The Huffington Post, vets can eat good in the neighborhood for free with proof of service (here’s the restaurant’s website, though the server seems to be overloaded).

Buffet chain Golden Corral is also celebrating military service next Monday November 16 from 5-9 pm with their Military Appreciation Monday free thank-you dinner. They’ve even got a fancy PSA with beloved Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinise) to promote it. No identification is required.

If you’re still hungry, Outback Steakhouse is offering a free bloomin’ onion and beverage today to anyone who can show proof of military service.

For vets with a sweeter tooth, swing by Krispy Kreme today for one free doughnut of any variety. Ooh, they even have Pumpkin Spice.

Veterans Day began as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Then President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars.

Maybe someday we won’t need one.
