Are you one of those people who live on energy/protein bars? I used to be, and though I’ve weaned myself off that lifestyle, I am still a sucker for those “healthy” bars that usually taste too good to be true. But when you’re on the go and need quick, fast nutrition, I do think that energy bars are a great snack. The question is… is there one that has all-natural ingredients and is good for you?

Well recently, the folks over at Amazing Grass sent over their Organic Green Superfood Energy bars which are raw, cold-processed, alkaline, gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan. Whew! That was a long list. The company also states the following:

“Our Green SuperFood bars are loaded with 2/3 of a serving of our Amazing Grass Green SuperFood drink powder. Our blend is a unique and potent combination of nature’s most nourishing, cleansing and rebuilding green superfoods and enhanced with digestive enzymes and active probiotics to improve nutrient absorption. The blend combines nutrient dense green food concentrates with superfruits like Acai, the powerful purple berry from the Amazon Rainforest, high in antioxidants, protein and healthy omegas.. We also add maca, the amazing adaptagenic root grown at high altitudes in Peru that is known to provide sustained energy, boost the immune system and support vitality and mental clarity.”

Amazing Grass has flavors of healthy goodness including Chocolate, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Berry, and Original, and so I was excited to try the chocolate flavor, for obvious reasons. The first thing I noticed when opening a package of the “Chocolate” flavor Superfood Energy Bar is that the bar looks like dark seaweed and has a wheat-grass type smell which was not appetizing. Then I tried it and was pleasantly surprised as it has a smooth chocolate flavor and only hints of the green stuff, and contains everything from probiotics, maca, to their Amazing Grass green drink powder.

I didn’t think the bars were amazingly delicious, but I did enjoy the energy burst that I got from eating one of these Amazing Grass bars. No coffee needed.

If you want to cut calories but stay all natural, you might be interested in trying Zevia, an natural soda pop with 0 calories. The 6 flavors are all sugar free and 0 net carbs: Cola, Black Cherry, Root Beer, Orange, Ginger Ale and Twist. It was created by a marathon runner, triathlete and a mountain climber and it tastes delicious. I work for the company and we’d love to send it out for blog reviews. You can reach me at margaret at zevia dot com.

I tried one of these out too... the color worried me a bit, but when I took a few bites it tasted not so diff. from most energy bars that I've tried in the past. I like that it's super good for you, but energy bars aren't my thing, the gritty texture really makes me steer clear of them, I prefer shakes/smoothies.

I discovered a highly nutritional organic powdered wheatgrass that 4 packets are equivalent to one tray of wheatgrass. Another important thing is the packets are used upon opening, not like a jar, which every time it is opened it oxidizes and loses its nutritional value. This is the only wheatgrass powder in the world grown Aeroponically in 100% purified oxygen; soil free, fungus free and pollution free. The roots contain cancer fighting nutrients not found in the blades. One of the nutrients, P4D1, has also been shown in laboratory tests to eat the protein sheath off a cancer cell so that the white blood cells can attack and destroy them. Another plus is by combining the roots with the blades the taste is more like a “green tea” and is not strong and nauseous as fresh wheatgrass is. You can drink this straight, no need to mix with anything else to hide the taste, just enjoy wheatgrass! Even kids love it!
