Most country musicians have an interesting sense of style. To say the least. So it wasn’t surprising when the red carpet of the Country Music Awards had no shortage of wacky getups, quirky hairdos and all-around questionable style choices. Nevertheless, there were the usual suspects who hit it out of the park with their red carpet looks.
Not only was Taylor Swift the big winner of the night, but she was also a winner on the red carpet. Her cream tulle and gold sequin gown was stunning and totally appropriate for the bright young star. Other mainstream country gals like Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill looked poised and gorgeous. It seems blondes rule the carpet in the country world. Mega movie star Nicole Kidman, back to her gorgeous strawberry blonde locks, looked stunning in a capped-sleeve red gown. Also in red, Patricia Heaton worked a long-sleeve beaded mini with plunging neckline.
However, as is standard for country music award shows, the misses far outnumber the hits. Martina McBride’s heavily-draped dress looked like a melting wedding cake. Miranda Lambert and Kellie Pickler wore equally tacky prom dresses. I wanted to like LeAnn Rimes’ white dress with black accessories (including dark eyes), but the fit made her look like a linebacker. And those dark eyes looked like two shiners.
Oh, and the men. There was, of course, many a cowboy hat on the red carpet. And men like Tim McGraw and Brad Paisley wore them well. But, knee-length tuxedo jackets, checkered jackets and unbuttoned shirt collars galore dragged the style level way down. Had Keith Urban not had his shirt undone down to his nipples, I would have never known he had that wicked chest tattoo. Surprise!
All in all, it was a pretty standard night for country fashion. Yeehaw.
