Meet Tavi, Fashion’s 13-Year-Old Blogger

She’s been in the front row at high-profile runway shows in New York. She’s mingled with the fashion elite and movie stars alike. She’s been on the cover of a fashion magazine. And now, she’s on her way to Japan to be the guest of honor at yet another fashion fete. So, who is Tavi? Well, she’s a bespectacled 13-year-old school girl whose blog, Style Rookie, has made her the fashion world’s latest darling.

This girl is really cleaning up. It seems fashion designers have gone ga-ga for the underage blogger. So much so that Laura and Kate Mulleavy gave her a free pair of knit tights from their line, Rodarte, she was sent a top from Proenza Schouler’s Spring 2010 collection, and Margherita Missoni literally gave the pint-size blogger the scarf from around her neck.

Tavi’s blog, for the most part, is less an encyclopedic fashion roundup and more a brag sheet listing all the cool things her new-found celebrity has allowed her to do, like being the guest of honor at parties for Rodarte and Comme des Garçon. And, all the aforementioned free swag she’s received. Then again, if I had such amazing opportunities at age 13, I would probably write something similar to what Tavi wrote on her blog following the Rodarte dinner party: “Hedi Slimane, one of my favorite photographers evarrrr sat across from me at dinner but I was too nervuz  to talk to him.” Notice her teen-speak! Nervuz. Adorable. So she doesn’t have the most well-formed vocabulary or sharp commentary. She’s doing something right.

It’s amazing what can happen with a bit of fashion ingenuity, a digital camera and a little Internet savvy. Poof! You’re a fashion star! Even if you’re still in junior high school. Perhaps it’s the charm of experiencing the cut-throat world of fashion from a child’s perspective that has everyone in a tizzy. After all, what’s more winning than a child who sources part of her wardrobe from her dad’s closet, as well as summer camp. I’m a fan. Besides, what we’re you doing at 13?
