Winter is fast approaching. And that means it’s time for holiday parties. So, you’re going to need the perfect wardrobe. Preferably one that doesn’t make you look like a Christmas tree or or include festive icons like reindeer or snowmen. Here are some tips for putting together a holiday wardrobe that is equal parts festive and classy. And, could possibly just extend beyond the holiday season.
Opt for alternatives to green and red: There are several ways to get around the red-and-green holiday color cliché. Wear one or the other with neutrals like white or black. Or, with denim. Metallics are always festive without being cheesy. But, my favorite alternative is to create and outfit using different shades of red and green. Perhaps, top off a teal dress (like this ruffled one from Anthropologie) with a maroon sweater. You get the holiday effect without being hokey.
The Dreaded Holiday Sweater: Unless you are attending a “Bad Christmas Sweater” party, then your holiday outfit should not include any bad holiday sweaters. Those that have reindeer or jumbo Christmas lights on them. Or anything with bells or a beaded Christmas tree on it. I’m a big fan of vintage ski sweaters, which I find really cozy, even if you’re not on the mountain. This sweater from Gap is an affordable option (yes, it’s a man’s sweater), but always check out vintage stores for great ski sweaters. Paired with skinny dark wash denim and tall brown leather boots, you’ve got a casual holiday outfit.
Festive Accessories: When in doubt, accessorize. You can keep your outfit simple, a black velvet cocktail dress, perhaps, but use accessories to turn the holiday quotient up a notch. A bright green satin clutch or red heels (not worn with the same outfit, naturally) would add a little cheer to any party dress. This Chanel-inspired purse from Mango would be a perfect option.
