The secret’s out. Meredith Baxter, the 62-year-old actress best known as the mom from Family Ties, has announced that she’s gay. She came out in an interview in The Advocate, and has since also shared the news with Matt Lauer on The Today Show. Check out the interview:

What is interesting, though, is that she wasn’t harboring these feelings back when she was on set with Michael J. Fox and Justine Bateman. “I am a lesbian and it was a later-in-life recognition,” she explained. “Some people would say, well, you’re living a lie and, you know, the truth is — not at all. This has only been for the past seven years.”
She said she decided to reveal the news about her sexuality after the tabloids started running stories about her. “I’ve always lived a very private life,” said the actress, who’s never even had a publicist. “To come out and disclose stuff is very antithetical to who I am.”
Meredith has been married three times and has five grown kids, but the sitcom mom says she came out to herself and family about seven years ago. She has been dating Nancy Locke, a 54-year-old contractor, for four years. I’m glad she can finally be happy!
seems as though she’s been just fine/happy all along — i mean, with her sexuality at least. she was heterosexual growing up, which she was fine with. then she turned lesbian, announced to her family and friends, and was just fine then. it wasn’t until pictures started popping up, that she felt it necessary to inform “the public,” which makes sense to me. she’s private about her life, and doesn’t have a publicist, no need to go blasting her sexual preferences to the world for no reason. I mean, does everyone with some sort of fame to claim have to publicize their current sexual desires?
