Marie Claire: Natalie Portman’s Private Life
It’s hard not to like Natalie Portman. The fantastic actress is cute and sweet, and somehow seems to be completely normal. She stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire in Brothers (out in theaters today), and in her new Marie Claire cover story, she talks about her eating habits, kissing Sean Penn, and even smoking pot.
A vegetarian since the age of 9, Natalie goes back and forth when it comes to turning all the way vegan. When she was shooting Brothers, she ate vegan because Tobey Maguire brought his own vegan chef to the set. “I was like, ‘Um, could you make two of those?’” She grins. “And I’d make a cute face, and they’d roll their eyes and give me another falafel.”
Her life is usually scandal-free, but last year rumors swirled that she made out with Sean Penn at Cannes. She was “caught in this shitty rumor brigade,’” she said. ”You can’t win. You don’t say anything and everyone’s like, ‘It’s true.’ You say something, and you’re keeping the story alive. It’s bad, bad news.”
Even though she hit the big time before graduating high school, Natalie stayed pretty mellow. “I didn’t really go to high school parties,” she said, “and yeah, I didn’t touch pot till I was in my 20s. I didn’t get flat-out drunk until I went to college. But I think that’s a good thing in many ways.” See? Totally normal.
