Product Review: Beauty Blender Makeup Sponge

beauty-blender-1
A long time ago, in a retail job far, far, away from my current occupation, I worked for a local apothecary that sold the latest and greatest in new beauty products. During that time, we received the Beauty Blender, and I automatically categorized it in the “kitschy” section of my brain, filing it away as both useless and expensive. Sure it was cute, but come on, $20.00 for a make up sponge? Ridiculous! However, I’ve been asked questions about how it works recently by two different women and I figured I would answer them here in a post.

What is Beauty Blender?

Well, it’s a makeup sponge that is different from any other makeup sponge you have ever seen, as it’s a bright pink egg shape and designed to fit the contours of your face without streaking or smudging. Designed by make up artists Rea Ann Silva and Veronica Lorenz, and marketed as the film and television industry’s best kept secret, Beauty Blender claims to:

Make application foolproof by allowing you to access hard-to-reach areas with stunning ease. Its suede texture is sensual to the touch and its unique curves fit the contours of your face, leaving your make up dazzling and undetectable.

The texture of this sponge is really smooth and soft against the skin, and it is absolutely reusable. Beauty Blender also sells a cleansing wash for the sponge that smells really good, but, eh, I used my regular face cleanser on it and it worked just fine.

Is Beauty Blender Worth the Money?

Deep down, I’m a foundation brush kind of gal. I’ve never liked using sponges unless it’s absolutely necessary because I hate how much product is absorbed into them and rendered useless. Fortunately, the Beauty Blender has found a way to reduce the absorbency so you get more of the product on your face, and not as much trapped in the sponge. So if you are a regular sponge user, you will definitely like the Beauty Blender.

However, considering its expense, there are a few drawbacks I’ve noticed: Even with regular washings it will stain and discolor, the color fades a lot after a few washings, and it will absorb more product the older the sponge gets.

Further, the egg shape is a little awkward at first and it’s a little big for small hands like mine. I found myself squeezing the life out of it so I wouldn’t send it flying across the room. For me, the best way to use the Beauty Blender is as a finishing touch, to lightly buff over a finished face and to eradicate any harsh lines and blending mishaps.

All said and done, when it comes to the Beauty Blender, I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it either. I have one in my makeup kit for clients who prefer sponges, and because of its unique appearance, its always a conversation starter. It’s just a little pricey.
