Oprah’s New Pilot for HBO is Steamy, Not Mind-Numbingly Inspirational?!

Oprah just announced that she is teaming up with HBO and the writer behind the indie hit Secretary to produce a pilot about a Los Angeles housewife who leaves behind the trappings of her life to explore her darker sexual side.  Sounds a bit like Deneuve in the dreamy Belle Du Jour, and Billie Piper in Showtime’s Secret Diary of a Call Girl (whose character IS named Belle Du Jour, in a nice connection).

Harpo Films president Kate Forte had this to say about their upcoming heroine:

“It is unsentimental and pretty shocking, and there is something complicated and destructive driving her.”

Coincidentally, “Unsentimental and pretty shocking” also describes Oprah’s other buzz-y project, Precious, recently nominated for 5 Independent Spirit Nominations.

What’s with all these “women exploring their deep sexual fantasies” TV shows and movies?  You could kind of throw HBO’s now-deceased Tell Me You Love Me in there, along with a whole bevy of foreign films, Heading South, The Piano Teacher and Ma Mere and too many more to name here.  We might jovially explore the slightly more sunny aspects of our sex lives via shows like Sex and the City – but “seeking the truly forbidden” isn’t always explored.  Is it a double-standard thing?  Men are allowed to descend into the dungeon for a little tie me up, tie me down, but women aren’t encouraged to be as adventurous?  More theories in the comments box please!
