Product Review: Red Mango Pumpkin Spice Frozen Yogurt

I. Love. Frozen. Yogurt. And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably have already experienced and tasted the frozen yogurt trinity goodness of Pinkberry, Yogurtland, and Red Mango. For those who haven’t, though, this isn’t the regular froyo that you’ll find in your local grocer’s freezer with a slightly aspartame-like taste and hard-as-a-rock consistency. With Red Mango, you have to actually go to the store, request flavors, and then ask for the toppings that fit your taste buds, including anything from fresh blueberries, raspberries, pomegranate seeds, mango, granola and mochi to gummi bears, yogurt chips, carob chips, cereal and much more. (You see how much I can write just about the plethora of toppings?)

Basically I’m obsessed and need a frozen yogurt fix more than I’d like to admit. (My past boyfriends can attest to this.) I’m always testing out different flavor and topping combos to see what provides the maximum amount of deliciousness in my ever-too-small plastic cup.

Recently, I had a chance to visit Red Mango which touts its yogurt as being kosher, all-natural, gluten-free, and low-calorie. Perfect! And then I saw that they were promoting their new “Pumpkin Spice,” frozen yogurt flavor, which they advertised as the perfect melange between pumpkin and cinnamon spice. Not TOO overly sweet, but just about right.

At first, I scoffed. No one can ACTUALLY make a pumpkin spice flavored froyo that doesn’t taste like old candy. Right? Nevertheless, I decided to try it out and ordered a small cup of the yogurt, with zero toppings, just to see if the flavor actually stood out.

And behold! Tart, pumpkin-ish and cinnamon-y. Plus! Not too sweet, either.

The CEO, Dan Kim, actually helped to develop the “Pumpkin spice” flavor, maybe that’s why it’s so good? For those interested in other Red Mango Froyo flavors, though, they also have the tart plain, green tea, pomegranate (from POM), and tangemonium (very light and citrusy) flavors as well.

All I can say is that for my next visit to Red Mango, I’ll be ordering this flavor, but in a large cup. A much larger cup. Oh, and no sharing from me.
