Courtney Love lost her rights as a parent today when courts appointed Kurt Cobain’s mother and sister to be Francis Beane’s legal guardians. As eagle-eyed TMZ reports, “Guardianships of this nature are frequently established when the parent is not capable of taking care of their children.”

A simple Google news search is all one needs to reveal Love’s various ups and downs over the last few years. Sample headlines include Love Frolics in See-Through Clothes for Dazed and Confused Magazine, Courtney Love Accuses Spears Dad of Molestation, Courtney Love Sued for Tweets, Nirvana Appears in Rock Band Despite Courtney Love’s Guitar Hero Rage. It’s not clear yet if Love’s erratic celebrity behavior is what caused the courts to make this decision, or whether more personal and darker demons drove the Cobains to seek this ruling. The guardianship has nothing to do with Cobain’s trust, so we can’t say it’s because they’re seeking all that Nevermind money either.

Love has been demonized by Nirvana fans over the years, either blamed directly for his suicide or because of her handling of the Nirvana legacy in the wake of his death. People in the first camp are probably relieved at the news that the young lass who shares her father’s sad eyes isn’t under the thumb of her “unique” mother, at least legally.

Sound off in the comments — is this yet another story the media should ignore because it involves private family dynamics, or does Love’s status as a provocateur render that right null and void?

What would the media have, if not the riveting trainwreck of celebritydom to draw from for headlines? I think it's tragic that Love can't get her act together and give her daughter the life she deserves, but it's no more tragic than the lady who lives up the road who can't do it either. Unfortunately, the only way that lady will make headlines is if she commits some outright crime to draw attention to her situation.
