Nothing has made me question my Italian-American heritage quite like “Jersey Shore,” the new MTV reality series about young, self-professed Guidos and Guidettes who all have an affinity for hair gel, weird nicknames and drama. And, apparently, on next week’s episode we’ll get to see Nicole (“Snooki”) punched in the face. Check out the video:
Wow. I think I lost a couple of IQ points just by watching that. What is it about “Jersey Shore”? It’s MTV’s most talked-about series since “The Hills” premiered back in 2006. It’s a pretty typical formula for reality TV drama: you put a bunch of slutty, volatile drunkards in a house together, provide alcohol and a hot tub, and see what happens.
I guess the novelty of this one is that it’s not a bunch of blonde surfer kids from California; this time we’re shedding light on the east coast phenomenon of Guido culture, a whole different concept of trashy-chic. People in other parts of the country are perplexed and intrigued, and, yet, I’ve heard of people in New York City (who are familiar with these kinds of people) throwing “Jersey Shore” parties in celebration.
What do you guys think of the show? I finally saw an episode this weekend and I have to admit that I couldn’t look away. (Maybe it has something to do with the guys’ ridiculously sculpted abs?)
UPDATE: MTV will NOT be airing this segment for an upcoming episode of “Jersey Shore.”
