What are Sheggings and Jeggings?

jeggings-1Every time a trend comes back, it has to be transformed and modernized. When Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester rocked a headband, it certainly wasn’t a big puffy one from the ’80s. So it’s no surprise that today’s leggings are new and exciting. But when does it go too far?

According to the Tulsa World News, Levi’s is now offering jean leggings called jeggings. ”This really is a breaking trend as we speak,” said Janine Chilton-Faust, vice president of women’s design at Levi Strauss. I’m definitely not in love with the term jeggings, but at least I’m not alone: the fashion bloggers at FashionPolice.net ask the poignant question, “Seriously, why do denim leggings need to be referred to as ‘jeggings’?”

Their diatribe continues: “Where will it all end? Will we be forced to start referring to black leggings as ‘bleggings’, red ones as ‘reggings’ and those shiny, latex ones that’ve been everywhere lately as ’sheggings’? We think that’s the way it’s going, and let us be the first to stick our heads above the parapet and say WE REFUSE. We will call them ‘leggings’ and we don’t care who corrects us. Who’s with us?”

Ah, so that’s what sheggings are. If you’re unfamiliar, American Apparel offers a virtual rainbow of shiny leggings. What do you guys think of the trend? Silly names aside, the denim leggings are certainly practical for tucking into boots. But latex? Sorry, but I don’t want to look like a human condom.

I feel your pain on the ludicrousness of modern life and smashing names together. It's the "Brangelina" effect, everyone thought they were so clever for coming up with that, that they have to keep doing it to many other less excellent double word combos. I generally support jeggings though - faking-like-you're-wearing-tight-tight jeans but still comfortable? Not a bad ruse.
