Rihanna has been advised to stick to local customs while performing in Abu Dhabi, by not donning her usual dominatrix pop goddess attire.

No pointy bras, no latex, no whips, no high heels.  She is being paid half a million dollars to perform at the Emirates Palace on New Years Eve and is expected to comply with these fashion guidelines.

For those of you with a fuzzy grasp of geography in this volatile region of the world, Abu Dhabi is the capitol and second largest city in the United Arab Emirates. Compared to Saudi Arabia, the UAE has more liberal laws…meaning, women can actually drive in the UAE. Shari’a law, which can dictate what women wear and other social mores, only figures into certain facets of family law in this country.

I tried poking around to find out if Madonna or Britney ever toured extensively in this region of the world. Madonna/Esther notoriously irked just about everyone when she made plans to visit Israel to get in touch with her faith.

Countries that do not support equal rights for women are strange places for such symbols of femininity and sexuality to appear. Do pop divas belong in the Middle East?
