1 in 5 Divorces Blamed on Facebook!

computer-couple-1We’ve all heard statistics about half of all marriages ending in divorce…but here is a new set of numbers of you: according to the UK’s Daily Telegraph, a British law firm found that 1 in 5 divorce petitions referred to Facebook.

Just as many teenagers are finding Facebook to be a negative influence on their studies, divorce lawyers claim that Facebook tempts people to cheat on their partners. Suspicious spouses have also used Facebook to find evidence of flirting and even affairs which have led to divorce.

Mark Keenan, Managing Director of Divorce-Online said: “I had heard from my staff that there were a lot of people saying they had found out things about their partners on Facebook and I decided to see how prevalent it was I was really surprised to see 20 per cent of all the petitions containing references to Facebook. The most common reason seemed to be people having inappropriate sexual chats with people they were not supposed to.”

Couples are now using flirty emails and messages found on Facebook pages as evidence of unreasonable behavior.

It’s easy to see how Facebook could provide evidence of cheating, but do you think it causes cheating? If nothing else, I do think it intensifies temptation. Most of us are guilty of looking up our exes, checking out photos, and maybe even messaging or chatting with people we never would have contacted otherwise.

  1. This article is relevant because people are talking about it but it is really a silly subject. People are not more tempted because of facebook, they are tempted because they are simply tempted.

I do agree that more people get caught because of facebook, hello, EVIDENCE!

If you’re going to cheat, you will cheat. End of story.

  2. I have to say if it wasn’t for facebook I would probably have no contact with my ex-girlfriends. While I would never dream of cheating, my wife was concerned about it enough that I gave her my password so she could take a look whenever she wanted and see there was nothing inappropriate.

  3. Yes but, how about numbers that tell us how many people met their mates using Face Book. To be fair, this is an excellent medium to reach out an find that some one that would have had a ghost of a chance any other way.
