They say the third time’s a charm. Well, come January 30, we’ll see if the adage holds up when the Spring/Summer 2010 collection from Whitney Port’s clothing line, Whitney Eve, hits boutiques. The launch of her line comes after attempts by her former “Hills” castmates, Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag, failed to make their signature lines successful.

From what I’ve seen on TV, Whitney’s style is more fully developed than her personality. So, her clothes do most of the talking for her on her reality show, “The City,” which chronicles her life as a “struggling” designer in New York City. She may not have many interesting things to say, but I’ve always enjoyed her style, even back to the early “Hills” days. So, I had high hopes for the upcoming collection. But, judging by seasons past, I am less than optimistic. The previous two collections (yeah, I didn’t know about them either) were disappointing. And, cheap-looking. And, boring. None of the things I was expecting them to be. Whitney, what happened? You’re line looks like it belongs in Forever 21 and not in high-end boutiques with price tags of up to $400.

Whitney’s style is a colorful bohemian trip that can easily go dark and sexy at night. Her style never looks forced or driven by labels and trends. Which is why her own line of clothes is so disappointing. It’s as if her designs are the clothing equivalent of her personality. When, all along, it was her clothing that was saving her from being completely irrelevant. She did recreate a spring-like pastel color pallet that is half-way to hitting the nail on the head. But, that’s about where the positives end.

Hopefully, she was able to infuse her new spring collection with the pizazz of her own style. Otherwise, well, she just might join Heidi and Lauren in the reality-star-turned-failed-designer graveyard.
