Precious was a pretty intense movie, so Mariah Carey needed to take the edge off. At least that’s what it looked like as she accepted an award for Breakthrough Actress last night at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. According to The Huffington Post, the diva lived up to her sometimes loopy reputation as she gave a long, rambling speech, clearly grasping for words through a haze of inebriation. Mariah looked glam in a skin-tight, black-beaded full-length Herve Leger gown, but as soon as she greeted her presenter and “Precious” director Lee Daniels with a little dance and a giant hug, you could tell she wasn’t quite on her game. She hesitated for a few seconds, looked to the ceiling, sighed and said, “Please forgive me, because I’m a little bit, um …” An audience member finished the sentence for her with an obscenity, and she smiled and said, “Yeah!” before giggling.
“Oooooooh, my goodness!” Mariah said before rambling about the movie and meeting Helen Mirren, whom she seems to have a major girl-crush on (can’t say I necessarily blame her). Now, I’ve heard that award shows are basically just occasions for stars to get wasted, but she could have at least waited until after her category was called, you know? It’s just disappointing because Mariah was actually really fantastic and understated in her role in Precious, and did deserve the award. But she overshadowed the occasion with her bizarre drunken speech.
