Mel C, formerly of the Spice Girls, had some critical words to say about the current crop of girl groups and it can be summarized down to this:
“Just look at girl bands now — they’re so sexual. We were tame by comparison.”
Also:
“It’s hilarious because we were criticized for being provocative or wearing revealing clothes a decade ago.”
She does not name names, but I sure don’t mind!
She could be talking about anyone from the Pussycat Dolls (take away the words ‘cat’ and ‘dolls’ and you have what this “band” is about), to the UK’s Girls Aloud (if you didn’t know, they look like THIS), to even solo artist Rihanna (who sometimes looks like THIS).
Mel C avoids saying the usual stuff about pop stars being role models for little girls, but it feels like it’s part of her critique. Remember, the Spice Girls were as controversial as THIS back in their day. The Spice Girls’ bobble-headed positivity seems relatively harmless when compared to the stripper pole antics of the PCD.
Anyhow, despite my rather low opinion of the PSD, plenty of people love them.
Your reaction?
1) She’s right – pop music is populated by harlots in fishnets nowadays
2) She’s bitter – a solo career for Mel C hasn’t exactly materialized
3) She’s NOT right – I love women who reveal their assets for the promise of quick stardom and lots of greenbacks!
4) I don’t care. Pop music is the domain of the fleeting and mediocre.
