Ahhh, it’s time to wind down from the busy holidays, and what better way to relax than to catch a movie at the theater? After last week’s lull at the box office, Hollywood is kicking off 2010 in style with a mixed bag of movies you won’t want to miss.
A fourteen-year-old hormonal catastrophe finds love, adventure and a whole lot more while on vacation in “Youth in Revolt” (R). There’s something about Michael Cera (“Juno” and “Superbad”). He’s so cute and nerdy, you can’t help but adore him, and he promises to capture hearts as C.D. Payne’s novel character, Nick Twisp.
I’ve been dying to see “Daybreakers” (R) since I saw the first trailer for it back in summer, and on January 8, the long wait will finally be over. Ethan Hawke stars in this futuristic tale about a world dominated by vampires. In order to maintain their dwindling blood supply, a team of vampires set up human farms and attempt to create a viable substitute to maintain their survival. I bet these vampires don’t sparkle in the sun!
Comedy seekers will want to check out “Crazy on the Outside” (PG-13), starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Ray Liotta. When a man paroled from prison attempts to put the pieces of his life back together, he begins to think that maybe prison life wasn’t so bad after all. Between his wacky family and over-zealous parole officer, he’s not sure if he’s coming or going. When temptation toward thievery calls, in the guise of his cousin, it’ll take everything he has to resist.
If you’re in the mood for a documentary, “In Search of Memory” (Not Rated), follows Nobel-prize winning neuroscientist Eric Kandel through his experimental research into his own memory and past. Kandel was forced to emigrate to the United States from Nazi-occupied Vienna at the age of nine, and has since been fascinated by the nature of memory.
Three bad-girls rush the scene in “Bitch Slap” (R), a retro-style “B” film in the tradition of “Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill Kill.” In a twisted extortion plot between a drug dealer, a prostitute and a corporate broker, all hell breaks loose and it’s every woman for herself when allegiances shift and the gloves come off. These bad-ass bitches don’t know nothin’ about no cat fights. They shoot for the kill. I’m surprised Quentin Tarantino’s name isn’t listed somewhere in the production credits because this sounds like nearly every movie of his I’ve ever seen.
If you’re looking for a great couples movie you can drag your guy kicking and scream to, I recommend checking out “Leap Year” (PG). Amy is ready to get married, and when her boyfriend gives her a pair of earrings instead of an engagement ring before his big trip to Ireland, her father lets her in on an old Irish tradition. A man cannot refuse a woman’s proposal on Leap Year. She heads to Dublin to make her proposal, but inclement weather lands her in Wales, and she finds herself partnered with an attractive Irishman on the journey, by land.
Looks like there’s a little something for everyone at the movies this weekend. I’ll meet you horror fans at the snack bar before the 9 o’clock showing of “Daybreakers,” and if you want to bring me a little thank you for keeping you in the loop, I’m partial to Milk Duds.
