The Curious Stylings of Leighton Meester

If Leighton Meester and Blake Lively got into a fashion fist fight, my money’s on Leighton. Sure, Blake may know how to work the cleavage, but when it comes to the “Gossip Girl” costars’ style, Leighton’s the one wearing the pants. Quite literally, after her most recent photo op at an event in Chicago.

I love that pants are starting to make an appearance on red carpets. I love glamorous dresses as much as the next girl, but there is something really bold about wearing trousers to a swanky event. And Meester’s combination of Katherine Hepburn-like trousers with a sheer lace top and bra á la Madonna, is a ballsy move. And I think it works. Paired with dewy neutral makeup and relaxed hair, she looked angelic. Even in a see-through top. And she’s been a consistant fashion risk-taker since “Gossip Girl” made her a household name. I can’t say the same for Blake Lively.

2009 was truly Leighton’s fashion coming-out party, despite criticism for outfits such as her Louis Vuitton superhero-esque sculpted tunic and leggings (paired with sweet Bette Davis hair) at the Met Gala and her blue flower-full Prabal Gurung dress. But, she rocks. Those risky looks are what make her front-page fashion news. And, who could forget her gorgeous white knotted-at-the-shoulders Bottega Veneta gown at the Emmys? I certainly can’t!

I’m always excited to see what Leighton will be wearing to events. And, after starting off 2010 on such a stunning note, I’m sure this year will be an even wilder year for Leighton’s fashion than last year was! No doubt! Meanwhile, Blake Lively will continue on her cleavage-bearing tour of the U.S.
